@slembcke @dotstdy I'm not really following the rest of the thread, but did want to reply to this specifically.

They have portable 4k monitors in the 15.6 inch -> 18 inch range on amazon. So 2x scaling on those monitors looks more or less identical to what you would be seeing on a mac. Source: Own one of them.

Anyway, I've learned that regular USB-C cables (non-thunderbolt) work on the 5k LG displays. It displays at 4k resolution, but with the PPI of the monitor you can't -really- tell that much. So I've settled on that with 125% scaling.

Also gnome -does- display @ 5k resolution over thunderbolt. X11 works as does wayland. X11 is better, as it has no tearing. Wayland has tearing in the center of the screen. At least, on the LG 5k monitor. You can find desktop computers that have working thunderbolt ports (both AMD and Intel). Some of the AMD x670 motherboards have thunderbolt ports, they just don't advertise them as thunderbolt.

Good luck!

@SueNeu @baldur I don't think it's resilient at all.

Most use OVH, Hetzner, Cloudflare & AWS.

Remove those four large providers and I bet more then 60% of the internet breaks.

What is with the AI spam on the fediverse in my feed?

No, I don't want to hear about your
research groups with your google link.

I don't care about the average joe talking about it, but I swear a lot of this crap is from corporations trying to push their agenda. Wouldn't surprise me at all if it was a campaign.

@amberdambey ...um, macos?

MacOS does this funky thing where the system RAM is used as VRAM and it counts it anyway.

If this is Linux and it uses a iGPU, same deal.

If this is a desktop on Linux with a GPU and you're using 15GB with a couple browser tabs open I'd scream to the heavens.

Linux does have this nifty feature called zram (compressed RAM).. may want to look into that.

@amberdambey Linux?

It's counting cached ram as used ram. Only explanation.

If it's
really using that much RAM, I'd punt the system into orbit.
