@recursive@DrSprockets@BegoniaArizona iPhones have a sensor on it that works in total blackness using infrared sensor technology (or something like this).
The way it works is it sends like 100+ invisible dots that map your face and then calculates the depth and matches it to a profile. If it matches, it unlocks.
What recursive is describing on the pixel 9 is just.. a regular photo... that the local neural processor analyzes. If your face matches, it unlocks the phone.
There are many downsides to using a regular photo... including the fact someone can just take an actual photo of you and hold it up to the phones camera and gain access to your phone that way.
Sorry, went on a bit of a rant here. The tl;dr is that the IR camera the iphone uses is pretty darn good from a security standpoint. The pixels method.... not so secure.
