@skydotbit I think they just want it to be like the ipad - a closed platform ecosystem for "security reasons". Every OS upgrade seems to push things in that direction.. IMO.

@skydotbit Welcome to MacOS.

I tried to manually compile some software once. I had to click allow 300 times in the privacy settings to run it. I wish I was joking.

Thankfully, Linux has been much less of a hassle..

@amberdambey Well, I sorta doubt you want to join my single user instance. The offer is open, though. I run a iceshrimp.net instance, which I'm intending on going public with once the new dedicated server I ordered is up and running next week.

I have no intention of shutting it down, and if I ever do I'll provide you with several months notice.

@skydotbit Am I surprised by this?

@malte Makes sense. It is fetching replies automatically now so bandwidth usage is expected to increase.

@lauren If you’re backing up the public cache directory I hope you are encrypting the backups as there can be unwanted material in there that you don’t want your backup provider scanning for.

Just my two cents

@lauren ..you're not also backing up the remote content, are you? Hope not!

But yes a large enough postgresql database takes a while to backup on its own.

@unixorn Oh this is a very good point. I apologize, I didn't think about that.

Though, I'm sure the site admin would be willing to follow the hashtag if you asked.

@unixorn Some relays offer hashtag-only options, making this a bit redundant.

@skydotbit You can use a file system with deduplication but that will only help you if the media on all instances is identical. If your sharkey instance (never used it) converts the images into webp or something, it won't be helpful.

@dplattsf That's a cool setup! I'm almost afraid to ask, but did you drill those cords into your ceiling? :O

Cat looks happy though.
